Volunteering - IT Support Assistant

Description of Role

This volunteering opportunity is open to anyone who will like to give their time to help children – ages 7 to 16 years and adults – to enhance their computer skills. No previous experience of volunteering or teaching is required as there will be training opportunities available for those who need it.

The volunteer needs to have computer skills in any of these programs: Coding, Sequence, Variables, Program Constructs, Python, Algorithms, HTML, CSS, JavaScripts, Cyber-Security, SQL, Data Processing, etc. You must have enthusiasm for the internet and technology, be patient and happy to help children as well as good at explaining things in simple terms to the children and adults.

The project through the means of a computer learning program, aims to enhance the life chances and self-esteem of children and adults living in Salford and Bury. The free computer learning program runs currently on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 6-8 pm every week. This program is intertwined with guest speakers who come and talk with the students about future aspirations and goals. We keep each class small, a maximum of 12 student per class, to give scope to helping the students to understand the skills they are learning.

We found that most of these children do not have access to computers at home, alongside the lack of understanding of computers and programming by parents or guardians, which puts them at a disadvantage to their peers. The programs that we teach are also not taught as standard in the local schools.
